Sauk Rapids Squirt B1s Are Three for Three
Sauk Rapids Squirt B1s have taken 1st place in all tournament play this season. The Squirt B1s were Kings of the Jungle in the Beast of the East Tournament held November 30-December 2, 2007, at Sports Arena East. The B1s won all three of their games against Osseo (10-0), Elk River (7-0), and Forest Lake (7-0). The B2s beat Cold Spring (10-3), and lost to Forest Lake (3-5) and Elk River (1-2) to take Fourth Place overall. Cold Spring won the coveted Hot Dog Trophy. January 19-20, 2008, the B1s traveled to Moorhead to take on non-District 10 teams. Saturday afternoon the competition was Lakeville South. B1s came out on top 11-0. The scoring was distributed well among the offensive players with all of them contributing. Luke Althaus (7) and Travis Kothenbeutel (11) each had hat tricks, Brandon Duray (4), and Nathan Shelander (14) each had two goals and Aaron Peckskamp (20) finished the game with one goal. Assists went to Luke Althaus, Ross Chapa (16), Tanner Clasen (8), Brandon Duray and Landon Kobluk (2). The defensemen, Landon Kobluk, Austin Stainbrook (22), Joey Streeter (18), and Josh Thyen (23) were busy keeping Lakeville out of the zone allowing only 7 shots on goal the entire game. Saturday night the B1s beat Moorhead in a closer game ending 3-0. Goalie Keagan Gunderson (30) had 13 saves preserving his excellent shut out record this year with 11 (including 5 shut outs in tournament play) to date. Ross Chapa, Travis Kothenbeutel and Nathan Shelander scored Sauk Rapidʼs three goals, with an assist going to each of Brandon Duray and Josh Thyen. Sunday in the championship game the B1s beat Wayzata Navy 8-2. Wayzata Navy broke the tournament shut out record for Keagan Gunderson with two goals in the 3rd period. February 9-10, 2008, the team traveled to Willmar to take on Willmar, Armstrong and Wayzata Navy. The first game Saturday morning was an early trip to the Willmar Civic Arena. The B1s came out on top with a finish of 12-2. Saturday afternoon they took on Armstrong and held a solid lead the whole game finishing 8-0. Sunday morning the B1s faced Wayzata Navy once again for the 1st place trophy. Wayzata came out on top in the first period with the first goal. Sauk Rapids woke up in the 2nd period and scored three goals, two by Travis Kothenbeutel and one by Nathan Shelander to end the 2nd period 3-1. The battle continued in the 3rd period and SR came out on top once again against Wayzata Navy with Ross Chapa scoring the final goal of the game ending it 4-2. Wayzata Navy has provided the SR Squirt B1s with their best competition in tournament play. Keagan Gunderson had 11 saves while the Wayzata goalie had 20 saves for the game.
